A coupled movement and bioenergetics model to explore the spawning migration of anchovy in the Bay of Biscay ArchiMer
Politikos, Dimitrios; Huret, Martin; Petitgas, Pierre.
Adult anchovies in the Bay of Biscay perform north to south migration from late winter to early summer for spawning. However, what triggers and drives the geographic shift of the population remains unclear and poorly understood. An individual-based fish model has been implemented to explore the potential mechanisms that control anchovy's movement routes toward its spawning habitats. To achieve this goal, two fish movement behaviors – gradient detection through restricted area search and kinesis – simulated fish response to its dynamic environment. A bioenergetics model was used to represent individual growth and reproduction along the fish trajectory. The environmental forcing (food, temperature) of the model was provided by a coupled...

A Geostatistical Definition of Hotspots for Fish Spatial Distributions ArchiMer
Petitgas, Pierre; Woillez, Mathieu; Doray, Mathieu; Rivoirard, Jacques.
Research surveys at sea are undertaken yearly to monitor the distribution and abundance of fish stocks. In the survey data, a small number of high fish concentration values are often encountered, which denote hotspots of interest. But statistically, they are responsible for important uncertainty in the estimation. Thus understanding their spatial predictability given their surroundings is expected to reduce such uncertainty. Indicator variograms and cross-variograms allow to understand the spatial relationship between values above a cutoff and the rest of the distribution under that cutoff. Using these tools, a “top” cutoff can be evidenced above which values are spatially uncorrelated with their lower surroundings. Spatially, the geometric set...

Acoustic observations in the Bay of Biscay: Schooling, vertical distribution, species assemblages and behaviour ArchiMer
Masse, Jacques.
Eight acoustic surveys were carried our in the Bay of Biscay, during 1989-94, to study the distribution and abundance of anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus, L.) in that area. Acoustic data were stored using the INES/MOVIES acquisition and processing system. Species-specific distribution patterns were confirmed through complementary sampling with a mid-water trawl. This paper summarises the combination of technical procedures used for acoustic assessments, and the results of acoustic surveys in the Bay of Biscay that pertain to the dynamics of this stock. Information is presented on the distribution and abundance of anchovy and co-occuring species, and on the movement patterns detected within the pelagic fish community, in relation to environmental conditions....

Age and growth of Cetengraulis edentulus (Clupeiformes: Engraulidae) in a subtropical bight of Southern Coast Brazil Rev. Bras. Zool.
Souza-Conceição,José Maria; Schwingel,Paulo Ricardo.
Age and growth of Cetengraulis edentulus (Cuvier, 1828) in the Saco dos Limões bight (Southern Brazil) were studied. Sampling was carried out from August 2001 to July 2003. The study of age and growth was based on the interpretation of the periodicity of ring formation in the otoliths sagittae of 491 individuals, temporal variation of otolith edge, relative marginal increments (RMI), age-length key, and von Bertalanffy curve. Cetengraulis edentulus otoliths were adequate for the interpretation of age with 86% of legibility, in which a translucent zone and its adjacent opaque zone were deposited each year. The translucent zone is formed during the cold period and the opaque zone in the warm period. Fish aged 0 (<12 months) - 4.0 year old were found and...

Analyse des petits pelagiques, sardine et anchois, dans le golfe de Gascogne ArchiMer
Coiffec, Gaelle; Duhamel, Erwan; Biseau, Alain; Danzart, Marc.
Since 1993 the yearly amounts of sardine landings for the Bay of Biscay fishing ports have experienced a constant increase (10,000 tonnes in 1993); on that account sardine is the first species landed in the fishing ports of the Bay of Biscay (15,000 tonnes in 2003). It is sold 0.54 € / kg (constant price over ten years) which means a 8,100 k€ turnover in 2003 and the 12th rank in value landed in the fishing ports of Bay of Biscay. Though anchovy landings have decreased over the last ten years, especially since 2001, this species occupies the 3rd rank of the highest landings (7,300 tonnes) of the Atlantic shoreline in 2003.The decrease of anchovy landings over the last ten years may account for the high increase of its constant sale price of 1.5 € / kg from...

Anchovies of the Sea of Azov and The Black Sea: Regularities of wintering migrations (Brief review) IBSS Repository
Shulman, G. E..
Close relation between internal (level of fat stores) and external (temperature fall) impulses of wintering migration of Azov and Black Sea anchovies Engraulis encrasicolus maeoticus and E. e. ponticus (“dosage principle”) was revealed. Schools with high fatness begin migration at more high temperature than that ones with low fatness. Intensity of migration also correlates with level of fatness. Regularities obtained may be used for study of wintering migration of other truly marine fishes.

Anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus) egg density measurements in the Bay of Biscay: evidence for the spatial variation in egg density with sea surface salinity ArchiMer
Goarant, Anne; Petitgas, Pierre; Bourriau, Paul.
Knowledge of the pelagic vertical distribution of fish eggs is central for several aspects of fisheries science including fisheries recruitment and egg production studies. In modelling egg vertical distributions, variation in fish egg density is an important issue. Though variation in egg density between individual eggs has been reported, evidence for significant spatial variation in egg density is novel. The present study provides evidence that egg density of anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus) varies spatially across spawning sites in the Bay of Biscay, depending on the regional scale variation in sea water properties due to river discharge. We measured the density of the eggs using a density gradient column at 17 stations in 2005 and 2006 as well as their...

Anchovy population expansion in the North Sea ArchiMer
Petitgas, Pierre; Alheit, Juergen; Peck, Myron A.; Raab, Kristina; Irigoien, Xabier; Huret, Martin; Van Der Kooij, Jeroen; Pohlmann, Thomas; Wagner, Carola; Zarraonaindia, Iratxe; Dickey-collas, Mark.
The abundance and spatial occupation of European anchovy Engraulis encrasicolus have increased in the North Sea since the mid-1990s. We use a cross-disciplinary approach combining genetics, transport modelling, survey time series analyses and physical oceanographic modelling to investigate 3 hypotheses on the reasons for this change. Evidence from connectivity studies suggests that the population of North Sea anchovy is separate from that in the Bay of Biscay. The recruitment pulses observed in survey data fit a life cycle which includes spawning in early summer and larval development in late summer. This also supports the concept of population expansion originating from local remnant population(s). In terms of growth physiology, suitable thermal windows...

Biophysical modelling of larval drift, growth and survival for the prediction of anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus) recruitment in the Bay of Biscay (NE Atlantic) ArchiMer
Allain, Gwenhael; Petitgas, Pierre; Lazure, Pascal; Grellier, Patrick.
Fish recruitment is the result of the integration of small-scale processes affecting larval survival over a season and large oceanic areas. A hydrodynamic model was used to explore and model these physical-biological interaction mechanisms and then to perform the integration from individual to population scales in order to provide recruitment predictions for fisheries management. This method was applied to the case of anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus) in the Bay of Biscay (NE Atlantic). The main data available to investigate survival mechanisms were past growth (otolith) records of larvae and juveniles sampled at sea. The drift history of these individuals was reconstructed by a backtracking procedure using hydrodynamic simulations. The relationships...

Body reserves mediate trade-offs between life-history traits: new insights from small pelagic fish reproduction ArchiMer
Brosset, Pablo; Lloret, Josep; Munoz, Marta; Fauvel, Christian; Van Beveren, Elisabeth; Marques, Virginie; Fromentin, Jean-marc; Menard, Frederic; Saraux, Claire.
Limited resources in the environment prevent individuals from simultaneously maximizing all life-history traits, resulting in trade-offs. In particular, the cost of reproduction is well known to negatively affect energy investment in growth and maintenance. Here, we investigated these trade-offs during contrasting periods of high versus low fish size and body condition (before/after 2008) in the Gulf of Lions. Female reproductive allocation and performance in anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus) and sardine (Sardina pilchardus) were examined based on morphometric historical data from the 1970s and from 2003 to 2015. Additionally, potential maternal effects on egg quantity and quality were examined in 2014/2015. After 2008, the gonadosomatic index increased for...

Change in the shoaling behaviour and nutritional condition of anchovies (Engraulis encrasicolus L.) during a wind-induced water column disturbance: a natural event test of a general hypothesis ArchiMer
Bergeron, Jean-pierre; Masse, Jacques.
Fishermen have long observed the sudden change of shoaling behaviour of small pelagic fish following a strong wind event. The phenomenon was thereafter confirmed by fisheries scientists using acoustic tools. In this study, we report our observations made with acoustics to measure disorganization of the previously observed spatial distribution and shape of shoals that occurred after a wind event. The measurements were made during a fisheries research cruise in the Bay of Biscay (NE Atlantic) aimed at determining i) small pelagic fish species abundance and ii) the individual nutritional state of anchovies (Engraulis encrasicolus L.) via evaluation of their RNA/DNA ratio. A spatial fine-scale study was conducted in two of the main breeding areas for anchovy,...

Comparison of airborne lidar with echosounders: a case study in the coastal Atlantic waters of southern Europe ArchiMer
Carrera, Pablo; Churnside, J.h.; Boyra, G; Marques, V; Scalabrin, Carla; Uriarte, A.
The feasibility of using airborne lidar (Light Detection and Ranging) was studied to assess the early juvenile fractions of the main pelagic fish species of the coastal Atlantic waters of southern Europe (anchovy, sardine, mackerel, and horse mackerel). Field comparisons with more established echosounder methods were undertaken in the summers of 1998 and 1999 during the recruitment period of sardine and anchovy in the selected areas, in the presence of a variety of oceanographic and environmental conditions. Backscattered energies as well as the types of target recorded by both devices were compared. The distributions of energies and the shape of the targets were generally similar for both techniques, with moderate numerical correlation between sensors,...

Contrôles de la distribution spatiale de l'habitat de reproduction chez les populations de poissons. Approche multi-modèles appliquée à la plie et au merlan de Mer du Nord et à l'anchois du Golfe de Gascogne ArchiMer
Loots, Christophe.
Spawning is a crucial phase of fish life cycle as it ensures the renewal of individuals in the population. The identification of factors that influence its spatial dynamic is therefore a key feature as it will affect the reproduction success of fish population. A multi-model approach has been developed in order to identify factors that control the spatial distribution of spawning adults of plaice and whiting in the North Sea and of anchovy in the Bay of Biscay. Generalised additive models have been used to relate presenceabsence of adults and their abundances to several hypotheses of control external (geographical position and environment) and internal to the population (spatial dependency, size, age structure and memory). Models were then ranked according...

De l'utilisation de protéases industrielles pour la production de sauces de poisson ArchiMer
Le, Minh Chau.
Fish sauces are traditionally used in most Asian countries. Whatever the process, the principle is the same i.e. a fish autolysis in saline media followed by a fermentation step. Not less than 18 months are needed to obtain a brown liquid rich in salt and amino acids. This PhD work aims to determine if an addition of proteases can speed up the process while keeping the nutritional and sensorial properties. The first chapter presents the characteristics of fish sauces and the key parameters of the processes used. In the second chapter, several industrial proteases are compared each other for their capacity to liquefy the fishes in hyper saline conditions. Kinetics of proteolysis and biochemical characteristics of the resulting hydrolysates are established...

A spatial indicator—the spreading area index—is used to describe anchovy and sardine spatial distribution in relation to biomass variation and to look for ecosystem differences within the Mediterranean basin. Specifically, the variation in the spreading area index in relation to biomass was examined for different areas of the Mediterranean Sea (i.e. Aegean Sea, western Adriatic Sea, Strait of Sicily, Gulf of Lion, and Spanish Mediterranean waters). In order to capture the spatial variability of the population at different levels of fish density, acoustic survey data for the years of highest, lowest, and intermediate abundance were used. In a subsequent step standardized values of spreading area and biomass were estimated to allow comparisons. Results...

Diet, feeding behaviour and trophic activity of the anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus L.) in the Gulf of Lions (Mediterranean Sea) ArchiMer
Plounevez, Serge; Champalbert, Gisèle.
Feeding behaviour of adult European anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus) was studied in the Gulf of Lions (northwestern Mediterranean Sea) in relation to major abiotic and biotic factors. Observations were made during the main spawning period (summer) for two years, data were collected through hydrological pro-tiling, zooplankton hauls and fish trawling performed in areas of high anchovy density. Temperature, salinity and zooplankton biomass were stratified in the study areas, with cladocerans numerous above the thermocline whereas copepods were dominant below. Engraulis encrasicolus was strictly zooplanctivorous during the main spawning season with copepod and crustacean larvae dominating in stomach contents. Anchovy exhibited high trophic activity during the...
